General Description

Music copied by a single scribe, probably a northerner working in Italy (PerkMC). Repertorial connections with FlorBN BR 229 and ParisBNF 15123. Copied in Naples. Repertory probably compiled by the theorist and composer Johannes Tinctoris, for Beatrice of Aragon, daughter of Ferrante I, King of Naples (PerkMC). (Reservations concerning Tinctoris' role in FallowsN). Probably taken to Buda in 1476, following Beatrice's marriage to Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary. German inscription on f. 1, dated October 3, 1609, records transfer of collection from Matteus Rohn (or Roha) of Glatz to Johan Georg Trigbor, in city of Freudenthal (now Bruntál). Owned in late 19th century by Baron Joseph Vitta of Paris. Later sold by anonymous collector through London firm of A. Rosenthal, Ltd.; purchased in 1940 by Yale University with funds donated by Paul Mellon.

General Note

the attribution to 'Borton' in Casanatense, earlier thought to be a composer attribution to Morton, has more recently been challenged by Wegman and Planchart, who suggest Borton was perhaps Pierre Bordon & the arranger of the 'slightly clumsy' (Planchart) 4vv version there from the 3vv version here. Planchart proposes Du Fay as the composer of the original 3vv version.
