Ms. écrit en plusieurs campagnes par un scribe principal qui a copié 42 pièces, le reste étant l'oeuvre de 6 autres copistes. L'importance accordée à Eustachius de Monteregali (21 motets sur 70), qui était maître de chapelle à Modena de 1520 à 1524, laisse supposer que la plus grande partie du volume a été constituée pour l'usage de la cathédrale de Modena durant cette période ou peu après, peut-être par Eustachius lui-même qui, en 1520, reçoit des chanoines un paiement «per fattura de un libro de canto.» (Roncaglia, 21). Le motet n° 12 en l'honneur du saint patron de la ville, San Geminiano, rattache aussi le ms. à Modena. L'encre ayant souvent rongé le papier, certaines lectures restent très douteuses.
