General Description

A 'Primo Coro' choirbook. Copied by Fra Philippo di San Giorgio, whose activity as a copyist at the Este court in Ferrara is documented in payment records; Fra Philippo also copied ModE M.1.13 (LockF). Contains repertory for Lent and Holy Week. Copied in Ferrara, for use at the ducal court of Ercole I d'Este (reigned 1471-1505). Este family library transferred from Ferrara to Modena in 1598; joined to Modena university library in 1892.

XVe s. 116 ff. Parchemin, 560x380 mm. Foliotation moderne en haut des ff. Les ff. 1, 36, 43 à 46, 49v, 50, 114v à 115v sont blancs; les ff. 1, 41, et 101 mutilés au coin supérieur. Notation mesurée blanche. 9 portées par p. Initiales et marges ornées or et couleurs. Reliure cuir restaurée portant au dos Liber choralis.

Ce ms. constitue avec les 2 suivants (Lat. 455 et 456) le premier exemple de ces mss. géants (grossacione) destinés à de grands choeurs de chanteurs. Il peut être considéré comme le ms. «jumeau» de Lat. 455; tous deux sont les premières sources qui montrent avec évidence l'emploi de l'exécution à double choeur, chaque choeur ayant son propre ms. (454 et 455) ne contenant chacun que la moitié de la composition, avec une musique (et quelquefois même un composi-teur) différente. Ainsi les psaumes et hymnes nos 1 à 41 et 49 à 79 (42 à 72 dans Lat. 455) qui devaient être chantés en antiphonie, suivent le même ordre dans les deux mss.

Les armes qui ont été coupées au f.lv auraient peut-être fourni des renseigne-ments sur le commanditaire du ms., très probablement copié à Ferrare pour les Este, à l'époque où Brebis et Martini, qui sont les seuls compositeurs nommés, taient actifs dans cette ville, soit entre ca. 1471 et 1492. A l'appui de cette thèse, on trouve un paiement fait en 1479 pour un «Libro da canto da vespero per la capella . . . composto per Giovan Martin componitore», qui correspond très probablement au ms. en 2 vol. MOe M.1.11 et 1.12.
