General Description

A miscellany, which consists or consisted of works by Cicero and Hugo of St. Victor, a commentary on the Pater Noster, etc. The origin of StV is uncertain, though it belonged to Jacques Bauchant in the late 14th century and later to Jhehan du Pont. The St. Victor library number kkk22 appears on f. 2v. The music fascicles are f. 255-293, which are 6 gatherings arranged as follows: 1. f. 255-260 (2 monodies, 2 two-part motets and 1 three-part conductus); 2. f. 261-268 (5 two-part conductus and 2 monodies); 3. f. 269-277 (5 two-part conductus); 4. f. 278-281 (5 three-part works); 5. f. 282-287 (10 unique two-part organa); 6. f. 288-293 (2 three-part clausulae and 38 two-part ones, generally known elsewhere in motet form).

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A mid-13th century parchment manuscript meas. 180 x 102 mm. for the music gatherings but not throughout. Originally the codex contained 305 folios, but f. 1-175 are lost, though the two old indices are now foliated 1-2 (f. 1 is probably 14th century, f. 2 late 16th). In addition, there are 3 blank, unnumbered paper flyleaves at both front and back. The binding is of dark brown leather over wooden boards. The codex is a miscellany, which consists or consisted of works by Cicero and Hugo of St. Victor, a commentary on the Pater Noster, etc. It is not clear where StV originated, though it belonged to Jacques Bauchant in the late 14th century and later to Jhehan du Pont. The St. Victor library number kkk22 appears here on f. 2v. The script throughout is a minuscule, which however varies from quite large lettering at the beginning to microscopically fine writing at the end. Initials are usually red, for the music red-blue or vice versa. There are 12 red five-line staves per page and the notation is of Notre Dame type, although this is rather a late source for such relatively unmeasured semeiography. The use of the English form of the conjunctura and a double length note with strokes protruding above and below the body of the note suggests English influence. The motet no. 3 is in a notation which differentiates between longs and breves and is reminiscent of Paris, Bibliothèque Nationale, fonds latin 11266. The music fascicles are f. 255-293, namely 6 gatherings arranged as follows: 1. Both the French and the Latin musical treatises written in the margins of f. 269-275 were published in CoussH, 259 ff.
