RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 15th century ribbed paper manuscript meas. 290 x 208 mm. and containing II + 355 folios. Fol. I is from a Hebrew ms, of which another page or part of one is glued to the inside of the back cover. Fol. II is part of the main codex. The corpus consists of "Joannes de Lignano apparatus in Clementinas" (f. 1-163 and 177-330), "Guilelmus de Monte Lauduno apparatus super Extravangantes Joannis XXII" (f. 163-177v), and Bartholomeus [Albizzi] tractatus de hereditatibus fratrum minorum (f. 330-355 v). Although the manuscript has been in Vorau since the 15th century, it apparently did not originate there. On f. 1, 191, 193, 355 and 355v there are notes showing that the ms has been in the possession of the canons of Vorau for many centuries. However, the note on f. 1 originally gave the name of Ulricus, bishop of Verdun, as the owner. The foliation is in modern pencil at t.r.r., with the exception of the flyleaves which use modern ink. (An error of one page has been corrected from f. 144 on.) The binding is of maroon paper over cloth over wooden boards, and it once had two clasps. On the spine is the old number of the codex: LXXVI, and on the front cover a label in Gothic letters probably dating from the 16th century: "Johannes de Lignano super Clementinas et super constitutions iohannis xxii". The last four words are crossed out lightly. Another Gothic label underneath reads "P XXXIII". Two flyleaves containing music have been removed from the manuscript, in which they evidently served the purpose of binding strips, for f. 1 consists of 12 strips and f. 2 of 11. Unfortunately, 5 strips are missing from f. 1 and 4 from f. 2, but the pages are fairly complete, even so. They originally measured c. 320 x 200 mm., but each strip now measures no more than 15 mm. in width (an exception is strip 4 on f. 1, which is c. 20-22 mm. wide). Judging from the writing on the other side of both folios, the music pages were originally blank spaces in a law manuscript. The notation is Franconian, with 16 brown five-line staves on f. 1 and 14 on f. 2 (actually the bottom stave on f. 1 consists of only four lines). Typically, the Tr and Mot are written in 2 parallel cols. The first three pieces are three-part motets, all of which appear in the seventh fascicle of F-Mo. No concordances could be found for the other pieces, though nos. 4 and 6 are doubtless motet fragments and no. 5 a conductus.
