RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 13th century Sarum Missal meas. 182 x 130 mm. and containing 321 folios. This total includes f. A-C at the front and f. 160 bis at the end. This parchment ms possesses in addition 1 unnumbered paper flyleaf at each end belonging to the rather worn 17th or 18th century binding of grey velvet over pulp boards. The codex probably arrived in France during the 100 years war, and in Poitou, to judge by the added saints peculiar to this province. There is no old foliation, only modern ink t.r.r., probably dating from the 19th century. The Gothic script employs blue-red and red-blue initials; occasionally some initials have miniatures on a gold background. The plainsong notation is typically English with single notes written as longs or rhombs. There are 14 red four-line staves per page. The polyphony is in larger notes with only 8 red five-line staves per page. Each part is written straight across the page. This notation seems to date from the early 14th century: longs and breves are clearly differentiated, c.o.p. ligatures are frequent and the English form of the conjuncture occurs. Initials are missing for the polyphony, except in the shape of the minute guide-letter. The 7 two-part motets all appear in Mo, but the unique three-part work may well be English, to judge from the liturgical texts.
