RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century vellum manuscript from the Carthusian monastery of Schnals in the Tyrol, Iu 457 meas. 239 x 171 mm. and contains 107 folios numbered in modern ink at t.r.r. Glued to the inner side of the original wooden boards, which are bound in brown skin, also probably original, are 4 leaves from a 12th century Psalter (2 at the front and 2 at the back). Up to f. 71v, for there are no flyleaves, Iu 457 consists of a series of sermons, the Dicta Haymonis de Sanctis written in a typical 2 col. minuscule of the period with important initials and rubrics in red. This appears to be a distinct ms from the music on f. 72-107v, which is a representative 14th century German collection of responsories, tropes, lessons, lamentations, etc. Monody mingles with polyphony, which is mainly in score in the corpus. Although Gothic neumes predominate, a number of additions are in Ars Nova notation. There are many illuminated initials, usually red alternating with blue, but black is frequent too, as in other German sources. The first initial is coloured blue and gold with red filigree. There are mainly 8 red five-line staves per page, and barlines are as usual present in score.
