RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A parchment manuscript finished in 1345 from the Augustinian foundation in Seckau, Gu 756 contains 230 folios meas. 287 x 190 mm. It is a codex containing principally the Ordo sive Breviarium Secconiensis Ecclesie, namely the liturgy of Seckau. The text incipits of liturgical compositions are given in black with occasional staffless neumes, which may be in black or red. The Gothic script frequently employs red ink, while the neumes are elegant German ones. The Breviarium ends on f. 178v, after which comes the musically more important Cantionarium containing newer compositions, such as Tro. Here the script is larger, and there are 16 lines of words and staffless neumes per page. The neumes are of the same type as in the earlier part of the ms. The four polyphonic pieces are all together on f. 218 v-219v and consist of two-part Benedicamus Tro, of which the first is in score and the other 3 are in parts. Red ink is used for the wavy lines which separate the two parts in score, as well as where text is interrupted by melismas. The only foliation in Gu 756 is a modern pencil one at t.r.r. The binding is of dark brown leather over wooden boards with blind tooling at front and back. 2 short clasps replace the earlier longer ones since 1957.
