General Description

A bifolio and a single sheet from a 14thC chansonnier, perhaps written by a Flemish scribe. It was described by Fétis and until recently believed lost. All but one of its 9 chansons are known elsewhere; only two of them survive complete in this fragment. Written by a single scribe.

DIAMM, 2017
Physical Description

one sheet of the bifolio has been cut in half vertically; the other sheets have been folded in half vertically. Apparently re-used as the covers of a narrow book. 3 sides were outer covers and are very rubbed; the internal three sides are well-preserved.

Several pages contain scribbles and notes from a rent register. These indicate that the bifolio was used for binding purposes at Ter Haeghen in 1490 and again in 1496, the single folio in 1500 and again in 1555.

DIAMM (and Haring&Boeke 2021) list the fragmentary, presumably textless, piece on fol. 1v as a concordance of "Ich sach den meyen" in CZ-Pu XI E 9 (and F-Str 222). Strohm (1984) pointed to similarities between these pieces, and concluded the version in CZ-Pu must have been a "garbled version". On closer inspection these two pieces cannot have been the same: beyond the first three notes the tenor does not concur (compare Haring&Boeke 2021, p. 64) and the cantus has no significant concordances at all.
