General Description

12 vertical parchment strips (cut from three leaves, several originally adjacent), recovered from binding of MS Bodley 88. Apparently the only surviving remnants of a larger musical manuscript. Also contains one fragmentary English carol text, without music. Copied in England. Of English origin; possibly copied in Oxford (BowersNSE). Book from which fragments were recovered owned in early 16th century by Hugo Bowles, of Oxford; no firm evidence for Herefordshire provenance or connection with Hereford Cathedral (BowersNSE).

Modern labelling of fragments, a-q, reconstructed as folios I-IIIv (& fragment q), as follows: fo. I, strips a (incorporating p) + b; fo. II, strips cd (incorporating e) fg; fo. III, strips mv, lv, iv, hv, kv, jr; fo. IV, strip q (no music). Fragments n and o (tiny scraps), incorporated in I–III. Ff. I & III appear to have been contiguous.

12 parchment fragments of varying sizes recovered from binding of Bodley 88; now mounted in reconstructed format between sheets of acetate and sealed. Apparently the only surviving remnants of a larger music manuscript. Modern labelling of fragments a-m. Reconstructed foliation I-III: I = a+b+p; II = c+d+e+f+g; III = h+i+j+k+l+m. Fragments n and o are tiny pieces inserted in I-III. Fragment q is not foliated. Carols in Latin and English

13 parchment fragments, of varying sizes (most ca. 205 x 17), recovered from binding of MS Bodley 88 in this library; now mounted on modern sheets of paper and kept in envelope. Apparently the only surviving remnants of a larger musical manuscript (original folio size probably ca. 275 x 200). Modern labelling of fragments, a-m. White mensural notation with red coloration. Copied by a single scribe. Some texts and fragments of initials in red ink. Manuscript also contains one fragmentary English carol text, without music.

Probably ca. 1440. Copied in England. Book from which fragments were recovered apparently bound in Herefordshire during last decade of 15th century; once in Hereford Cathedral. Probably acquired by Bodleian Library in early 17th century.

Physical: Change "13 parchment fragments" to "12 parchment fragments."
