General Description

Composite of five unrelated manuscripts later bound together. Contents include writings on alchemy, medicine, astronomy, and religion. Only new f. 68' (paper) and new f. 69 (parchment) contain music, copied by two scribes. English secular piece on f. 68' in choirbook format; Latin carol on f. 69 in score format. Two Latin/English carol texts, without music, on f. 69'; f. 68 blank. Copied in England. Owned by the antiquarian Elias Ashmole (1617-92); bequeathed to Oxford University in 1677. Housed in Ashmolean Museum 1683-1860, then transferred to Bodleian Library.

New pencil foliation, 1-70; various systems of original foliation or pagination in individual manuscripts. New covers of brown leather on cardboard, with two metal clasps. Only new f. 68' (paper) and new f. 69 (parchment) contain music, copied in black mensural notation by two scribes. English secular piece on f. 68' in choirbook format; Latin carol on f. 69 in score format. Two Latin/English carol texts, without music, onf. 69'; f. 68 blank. No initials or decoration.

Ca. 1425 (HughM). Copied in England. Owned by the antiquarian Elias Ashmole (1617-92); bequeathed to Oxford University in 1677. Housed in Ashmolean Museum 1683-1860, then transferred to Bodleian Library.
