RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: The main contents of this ms are some accounts from the time of king Henry VIII dated from September 29,1516-June 24, 1517 and headed by the name John Campyon. It would appear that the musical bifolio, which dates from the first half of the 14th century and was used as a cover for the accounts, was with the 16th century pages from the beginning. In any case, both mss were mutilated by rodents in corresponding places, namely the top left-hand and bottom right-hand side. The music meas. 49 x 34 cm. and is not the middle of a gathering. The mainly long-breve notation is written on 12-13 red five-line staves per page. There are no minims, but groups of 3 semibreves to a single syllable may be found occasionally. Initials are red-blue, and items 2 and 6 bear the original work-numbers in red, namely 25 and 37. Moreover, both f. 1 and 2 bear the heading quadruplices in red, and each complete piece is preceded by the word cor, which presumably means chorus. All 8 pieces are motets, the majority with the characteristically English textless quartus cantus. The first 3 motets are Christmas ones, no. 6 is in honour of St. Thomas Becket and no. 7 of king Edward III.
