General Description

A Sextus partbook from a set of six volumes. Each partbook is a modern compilation (by J. J. Maier) of originally separate items, of varying sizes. Copied by eight scribes—I: #1, #7-14 (also wrote parts of MunBS 1503b and #1 of ParisBNC 1591); II: #2 and #17 (also wrote #3 of ParisBNC 1591); III: #3; IV: #4; V: #5 (also wrote #7 of MunBS 1503b); VI: #6; VII: #15 (also wrote #12 of ParisBNC 1591); VIII: #16 (also wrote #11 and #13 of ParisBNC 1591) (Rifkin). Most items probably copied in Augsburg; several items probably of Netherlandish origin; two or three items possibly copied in Italy. Owned by Johann Heinrich Herwart (1520-83) of Augsburg. Herwart collection purchased by Wilhelm V, Duke of Bavaria, in 1585; placed in court library at Munich, whose holdings formed foundation of present Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
