General Description

A bifolium from the centre of a gathering, written in England c.1400. Used in between 1475 and 1500 with fols. 159, 162 and a further bifolium (fols. 160 - 161) from a 13th century noted breviary to form the fly-leaves and pastedowns at each end of a cartulary copy of an extent, 11 Edward IV (1471-1472), for the manors of Cockfield, Brentfen, Strickland, Muryell and Yoxford, held by John Hopton, armiger (d. 1478). Deposited at the Suffolk Record Office in 1952, at Keble College, Oxford, 1983-1990, and again at the Suffolk Record Office in 1990. Repaired and boxed at the Bodleian Library, Oxford, in 1990. Fol. 162, formerly the back pastedown, has been lifted and the verso, hidden by the chemise when the book was first described, can now be read. Owned: John Hopton, armiger and his heirs; the Blois family at Cockfield Hall, Yoxford.

RISM Supplement:

IPSWICH, SUFFOLK RECORD OFFICE, HA30: 50/22/13.15, FOLS. i-ii.

s. xiv ex

2 fols, (unfoliated, here designated i and ii). Parchment. Now 320 x 230 mm. Written space 278-280 x 180-184 mm. Ruling: twelve red five-line staves (14 mm) ruled with a rastrum; frame rules, and double text guides. Collation: a bifolium from the centre of a gathering. Script: gothica textualis quadrata of moderate quality. Notation: Ars nova; red full coloration in 1 and 2, and cauda hirundinis. Decoration: cues for major initials for 1 and 3.

Written in England. Used, s. xv 3/4, with fols. 159, 162 (see below), and a further bifolium (fols. 160 - 161) from a noted breviary, s. xiii, to form the fly-leaves and pastedowns at each end of a cartulary copy of an extent, 11 Edward IV (1471-1472), for the manors of Cockfield, Brentfen, Strickland, Muryell and Yoxford, held by John Hopton, armiger (d. 1478). The binding, of white whittawed leather over oak boards, is contemporary with the manuscript; the original chemise in red whittawed leather survives with leather ties, and the remains of two strap-and-pin fastenings. A medieval title (now illegible) is written on the back cover. Fols. i-ii, and 159 and 162 may have been drawn from different manuscripts, or may represent entirely separate copying stints within one book compiled over a period of time. Scribbles, s. xv-s. xvi, including a roughly written 'T' on fol. ii that also appears in the extent, added in margins after use in binding.
