RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A parchment codex of c. 1400 meas. 285 x 200 mm. and consisting of 211 folios. An extra folio at the front was formerly stuck to the cover. There is an incorrect 16th or 17th century ink pagination at t.r.r. and t.l.v. and a new pencil foliation at the bottom right recto. The binding is of white leather with simple criss-cross tooling on the front and back. There are two clasps and metal corner pieces at all four corners with a central stud at front and back. The spine was renewed more recently. The contents are a Proprium de tempore, a Proprium de sanctis, a Kyriale and a short Troper cum sequentiary. Apart from odd additions, the codex is in one hand. It was written in Erfurt sometime after 1333, perhaps for the Augustinian nunnery in the Neuwerkskloster. The notation is in Gothic neumes written on 11 five-line staves per page with the c-lines in yellow and the f-lines in red. The other lines are black. The custos is absent and liquescence is not clear in this notation. There are many illuminated initials, usually in blue and red but also in yellow and green. In some cases marginal decoration develops from the initials in red. The one polyphonic piece Crucifixum in carne laudate is clearly identical with F 59. It occurs on f. 73.
