General Description

Script: gothica textualis quadrata. Written in England, possibly at Durham. Used probably s. xvi in. to form a simple wrapper for the Communar's Cartulary, a general cartulary of the communar's office, written c. 1500 (cf. the marks made across the middle of the leaf by the spine of the cartulary) ; the leaf is now folded and bound in the front of the volume. Pen trials and scribbled void note shapes, s. xv/xvi, on verso: 'Hec indentura facta fuerit inter Johannes hominis' ; 'Et amen quod R'. Binding of s. xix.

RISM Supplement: 1 fol. (unfoliated). 395 x 265 mm. Written space 340 x 230 mm. Ruling: twelve freely-ruled brown five-line staves (16-17.5 mm); rough frame-ruling in dry-point, and double text guides. Script: gothica textualis quadrata. Notation: English ternary breve-semibreve; cauda hirundinis and mensuration signs. Decoration: blue three-line initial, elaborately flourished in red, at the opening of 1.

Ed. PMFC 16, No. 26; middle voice carries plainsong Sarum Gloria 9 (this chant is similar to F-Pa, MS 135, fol. 235v). Text is the Gloria trope Spiritus et alme.
