RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 15th century manuscript meas. 271 x 190 mm. and containing 247 folios +1 blank unnumbered paper flyleaf at each end belonging to the modern binding of dark brown half-leather and mottled paper over boards (these may be wood, but, since they cannot be seen, there is a possibility they are of pulp). The binding is dated 1958; it has a gilt title on the spine: "Alyanore || Hull, & c.". There is a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. This codex is mainly a paper one, but a parchment bifolio begins each fascicle. The contents, which are written in English, consist principally of "The VII Psalmes the wheche Dame Alyanore Hull translatted out of Frensche in to Englesche" (f. 2-147), "Meditacyons upon the VII dayes of the woke", again translated by A. Hull (f. 148-179v), and poems by J. Lidgate (f. 194-214v). Initials are red-blue in the corpus. The 2 music folios at the end are notated by 2 different hands: (a) a neat Ars Nova notation in 3 accolades of 3 red five-line staves per page with red initials; (b) the staves remain the same, but there are no red initials, while the Ars Nova notation is in a rougher hand with rectangles replacing squares.
