Mss. M(D), L(B), P(E), D(F), N(H), C

Ces 6 mss. (le 7e G étant plus tardif) copiés dans la 1ère moitié du XVIe s., forment un ensemble inséparable, et par le répertoire et par les scribes qui se retrouvent dans plusieurs d'entre eux. Le papier identique pour tous, les reliures originales toutes semblables, indiquent que ces mss. auraient été copiés et reliés au même endroit, très probablement à Casale pour l'usage de la cathédrale, comme semblerait le prouver la présence de compositeurs locaux (Francesco Cellavenia ou Nicolaus de Madis) et de motets dédiés au patron de la ville, saint Evasius. Cependant, le style néerlandais de l'écriture dans certaines parties (les messes de M(D) et les ff. 1-60 de L(B) ont pu faire penser qu'elles auraient été copiées aux Pays-Bas dans l'atelier de Pierre Alamire (Staehelin), alors qu'il est plus probable qu'il s'agit de scribes néerlandais travaillant en Italie. La chronologie de la copie s'établirait comme suit (Crawford):

I. 1515-1518: Messes dans M(D) et ff. 1-60 dans L(B)

II. 1521-c. 1526: P(E) entier, ff. 63-71 dans L(B) et 1-66 dans D(F)

III. 1538-c. 1545: Motets dans M(D), ff 67-151 dans D(F), N(H) et C entiers.

Sur plus de 230 pièces, on y relève 90 unica dont des messes inconnues de Barra, Bruhier, Mouton, Ninot le petit, A. de Silva.

XVIe s. 128ff. + 1f. limin. folioté 1-141. Papier, 465x325 mm. Foliotation ancienne jusqu'à 116, d'après laquelle 12ff. semblent manquer: ff. 7, 16, 17, 56 à 58, 67, 68, 108, 113 à 115. Les ff. 34, 61, 109, 123v, 124, 129, 130, 140v à 141v sont blancs. Au f. 14v qques lignes de musique dont le début de Sup. d'un Benedictus; au f. 15 qques notes sans suite; au f. 141v, fragment de Gloria polyph. Qui sedes ad. L'ordre des 2 premiers cahiers a été inversé. Notation mesurée blanche. 11 portées par p. Qques capitales ornées à la plume. Reliure du XVIe s., cuir collé sur carton.

Pour les motets de la 1ère section (nos 5 à 35), les nombreuses concordances avec des sources de la 3e décade du siècle permettent de situer la copie entre 1521 et c. 1526, d'autant plus qu'on y retrouve les 3 scribes du ms. P(E). Le reste du ms. a été commencé probablement quelque dix ans plus tard, vers 1530-1536, ce que corrobore la présence pour la première fois d'un motet de Morales (no 48) dont on sait qu'il n'arriva à Rome qu'en 1535, ses oeuvres n'ayant dû commencer à circuler dans le pays qu'à partir de cette date.
