General Description

A Bassus partbook from a set originally of four volumes. Copied by five scribes, one of whom ('Andream Iudicem' = Andreas Richter) is identified in an inscription inside back cover of Bassus book; all five hands also appear in LeipU 49 (NoblRL). Repertory in five main sections - I: 15 Masses, probably copied from an Ott/Formschneider print of which no exemplars have survived (NoblRL); II: 9 motets and 1 German sacred piece; III: 19 pieces with Latin texts in classical meters, copied from the print RISM 1539/26; IV: 50 motets, copied from the prints RISM 1538/7, 1538/8, and 1540/6; V: 5 Masses, copied from the print RISM 1541/1. (Remaining two pieces added at end of each book shortly after copying of five main sections). Copied in Leipzig, perhaps under the direction of Melchior Heger (1522-68), cantor at the St. Thomaskirche. Remained in library of Thomaskirche until 1930, then transferred to Universitätsbibliothek. Removed for safekeeping during World War II; returned to Universitätsbibliothek in 1959.
