RISM Description

RISM Supplement: 4 fols, (two fols, are fragmentary; unfoliated). Parchment. Now 244 x 190 mm. Written space 210 x 145 mm. Ruling: twelve red staves, freely-ruled in four systems of two five-line staves (17-18 mm) and one four-line stave (13 mm); some double text guides, and ruled indentations for the initials on fol. lv (15 mm) and fol. 3 (10 mm). Collation: two adjacent bifolia (fols. 1+4, and 2 + 3 below), not necessarily from the centre of a gathering. Script: gothica textualis quadrata. Notation: unstemmed semibreves, without dot of division, used melimatically. Decoration: red and green (originally blue?) major initials flourished in green and red; red and green capitals in text.

Written in England. Used to form the pastedowns of MS 84, a collection of miscellaneous theological texts, s. xv, including parts of David of Augsburg, De exterioris et interioris hominis compositione, and Bernard of Clairvaux, De contemplando Deo. The present binding, of white whittawed leather over bevelled boards, with corner mitres and the remains of a single clasp, is probably contemporary with the manuscript. Along note, now fragmentary but including '...a istius fratribus ... per chorus iste ...', was added at the foot of fol. 2 v, probably s. xiv, and certainly before binding. The music leaves were removed in 1981, and are now kept separately. Owned: William Crashaw, Fellow of St John's College; bought c. 1615 by Henry Wriothesly, third Earl of Southampton (d. 1626). Given by Thomas, fourth Earl, 1635.
