General Description

A Consuetudinary of St. Mary's, York, in which music appears only rarely. The hymn with voice exchange appears on f. 141 preceded by the text 'Ympnus Nunc sancte qui in omnibus festis principalibus cantatur secundum duplicem melodiam et incipitur a duobus in medio chori sic:' The incipit is as in Harley 4664, but a fifth lower.

This MS was a gift of Thomas Hutton, who presented it to the college on November 14th, 1638. The text of the Consuetudinary is edited by the Abbess of Stanbrook and J. B. L. Tolhurst in vols. 73, 75 and 84 of the Henry Bradshaw Society (1936-).

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A vellum Consuetudinary of St. Mary's, York, meas. 223 x 150 mm. and containing 262 folios + 1 unnumbered, originally blank folio at the end. Moreover, 2 ribbed paper flyleaves at each end date from the 17th century. The binding is of dark brown leather over pulp boards. An old foliation in brown ink at t.r.r. runs to 275 and takes no account of the present gaps. The initials are red-blue. The codex was a gift of Thomas Hutton, who presented it to the college on November 14th, 1638. It must have been written shortly after 1398. The text of the Consuetudinary is edited by the Abbess of Stanbrook and J. B. L. Tolhurst in vols. 73, 75 and 84 of the Henry Bradshaw Society (1936-). Music appears only rarely in this source, using longs and semibreves for single notes, though there is no mensural significance in them. The hymn with voice exchange appears on f. 141 preceded by the following text: "Ympnus Nunc sancte qui in omnibus festis principalibus cantatur secundum duplicem melodiam et incipitur a duobus in medio chori sic:"
