General Description

A Bassus partbook from a set originally of five volumes. Copied by Thomas Wode or Wood, named as scribe on several folios. Copied in St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland. Original owner and compiler was Thomas Wode or Wode (d. 1592), vicar at St. Andrews. Owned in 19th century by Archibald Constable, of Edinburgh. Purchased by a Mr. Thorpe at 1828 sale of Constable's property; later passed to present library.

Modern pencil pagination in D book, 1-183, excludes front flyleaves and ends on recto of back flyleaf. Modern pencil pagination in B book, 1-198 ("1-8," "11-14," "25-26," "31-32," "67-70," "79-80," "137-140" omitted in order to account for lost original pages; "103-112" omitted by mistake). D book donated to present library by Jacob Brown, a theology student at Edinburgh University, in 1672 (inscription at beginning). B book owned in 19th century by Archibald Constable, of Edinburgh.
