General Description

A Tenor partbook from a set originally of five volumes. Main corpus compiled and copied in St. Andrews, Fifeshire, Scotland, by Thomas Wode or Wood (d. 1592), vicar at St. Andrews, who is named as scribe on several pages. One psalm setting copied partly by John Buchan (inscription in Lbl Add. MS 33933); one canticle setting copied partly by Andrò Kemp (inscription on p. 119 of Bassus book); other unidentified scribes made additions in early 17th century; later additions possibly copied in Aberdeen (HutchiS). The subsequent history of the set prior to 19th century is not known (except for duplicate Discantus book EdinU Dk.5.14, in Edinburgh University Library since 1672). Apparently, some or all books were at one time in Ireland, but only the Quintus book DubT 412 has remained there. The Discantus and Tenor books, which earlier belonged to an unidentified Irish clergyman, were purchased by the antiquarian David Laing at 1867 sale in London. Bass book purchased by a Mr. Blackwood, of Edinburgh, at Dublin auction; apparently acquired by Laing in 1835 ('D. Laing 1835' inside front cover). The three books (DTB) passed to their present library following Laing's death.
