1 paper partbook (Tenor Decani-i + 274 + vii + i folios), 298 x 192. Some folios fragmentary or in poor condition; restored and repaired. Part I = first 141 folios; Part II = last 133 folios + back original flyleaves. Copying of Part II began at back of book, working toward middle; music of Part II upside down in relation to that of Part I. Original ink and new pencil pagination in several hands—Part I: 1-282; Part II: 1-262 (some errors and inconsistencies in Part II pagination). Blank staves only—Part I: pp. 84, 153-282; Part II: pp. 141, 144-145, 153, 212, 234-262. Rebound in modern covers of dark brown leather over boards; portions of original leather covers, blind tooled with decorative border design and gold stamped on front with "TENOR. DE. F. A", incorporated in modern binding.
Original index of first group of verse anthems in Part II (ff. [iv-v]) lists pieces in order of appearance; original index of second group of verse anthems in Part II (ff. [vi-vii]) lists pieces in order of liturgical calendar, which also corresponds to order of appearance. Modern index on loose sheets at front and back lists pieces in order of appearance.
Main layer copied by Toby Brookinge, who also wrote most of DurC C2, DurC C13, DurC C16, DurC E11a, and YorkM 29, parts of DurC C4, and some additions in DurC C8; later additions by Alexander Shaw, John White (see general index for other manuscripts in which these two scribal hands appear), and one unidentified scribe, who also made additions in DurC C2, DurC C13, and YorkM 29 (Brian Crosby). Staff height 14. Space left for large decorative initials, but initials never added; some text, titles, and headings in Part II in red. Edges of folios gauffered, gilded, and decorated with red and green.
1632-4 (Brian Crosby), with additions in second half of 17th century. Copied in Durham, probably for dean of Durham Cathedral (CrosbyD). "Denis Grenvell" and "John Sudbery / his book" appear on recto of first original flyleaf of Part II; Grenvil was dean of Durham Cathedral 1661-84, Sudbury held same position 1684-91.
