General Description

Treatises and most polyphonic examples copied by Johannes Materanensis; five pieces added slightly later by a different hand; canons added in 1552 by two other scribes, probably associates of Raffaele Sozi. Main corpus copied in Venice; the original owner and compiler was Johannes Materanensis (inscription on f. 45'). Later owned by the merchant, politician, and amateur musician Raffaele Sozi (1529-89) of Perugia; canons probably added in Perugia by associates of Sozi.

XVIe s. (1509), 139 ff. Papier, 210 x 157 mm. Foliotation ancienne en haut à droite des ff.: 1-139. 1 ou plusieurs ff. mq à la fin du ms.

Ce ms. qui, dans les années 1550, a appartenu (comme le ms. G 20 de la même bibliothèque) à Raffaele Sozi, porte au f. 45v: «In Venetiis MCCCCCVIIII, die XXI junii Dominus Johannes Materanensis ad suam utilitatem scripsit.» et au f. 123: «1509 17 julii.». Le musicien inconnu Johannes Materanensis y a copié en 1509 à Venise quelques ouvrages théoriques, dont le Lucidarium de Marchetto da Padova aux ff. 5 à 45v et 47v-68; aux ff. 71 à 123, deux traités de notation proportionnelle illustrés de 73 exemples musicaux, le plus souvent à 2vx., quelques-uns à 3 et un seul à 4 (no 22, unicum de Busnois), généralement sans paroles et sans noms d'auteurs. Postérieurement, Raffaele Sozi a largement annoté les marges des traités et ajouté les exemples nos 1 et 24 à 26, parmi lesquels une Fuga (canon à plusieurs vx. no 25) qu'il date: 1552.

Some short musical examples in treatises copied in square chant or black mensural notation, but all polyphony included in above list of contents copied in white mensural notation. Treatises and most polyphonic examples copied by Johannes Materanensis; five pieces added slightly later by a different hand; canons added in 1552 by two other scribes, probably associates of Raffaele Sozi (see below). Staff height 9. No initials or decoration. Most polyphonic examples illustrate musical proportions.
