[Translation] 15th cent. 2 vols. 59 and 194ff. of which 9p. are music. Parchment, 530-550 x 420 mm. Various older and modern foliations. Black mensural notation. 7 systems per page.

The collegiate church of S. Maria Maggiore posseses 8 major liturgical books in-fol. on parchment. Only the last two volumes of the Graduale (itself in 3 vol., of which the first bears the date 1333) contain some polyphonic pieces. In these MSS, which are in several hands, numbers 2-5 of the polyphonic pieces show common graphical properties which can be dated to the first decades of the fifteenth century. As far as is known, these parts are the first evidence of the spread of polyphonic music in Central-Southern Italy. All the same, the relationship that has been revealed between the Agnus (No. 4) and Landini's Ballata 'Questa fanciulla' (which is identical to a Kyrie in MS D-brd Mbs-3232a.Cf. FischerK, 46) shows that the connections that the region of Abruzzo maintained with culture in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries - connections that have already been suggested for other areas - are verified for music.

Editions

All parts are transcribed in Cattin / Mischiati / Ziino, with facs. All lesff. except 53v to 54v.
