General Description

Copied mostly by one main scribe and five additional scribes (BernF); one of the additional scribes also added several pieces to FlorBN Magl. 107bis (RifSC). There are also scribblings by later hands on some folios. Copied in Florence (BernF, who refutes earlier suggestions of French provenance for portions of manuscript).

XVIe s. 64ff. Papier, 163 x 250 mm. Foliotation moderne: 1-64 et restes d'une foliotation ancienne très discontinue en haut des ff. Notation mesurée blanche. 6 portées par p. Au bas des ff. 20, 22v, 23, 29v, 30v, 31v, 33v, 44 [67], 58v [81v], 59 [82], 59v [82v], 60v [83v], fragments musicaux copiés postérieurement. Aux ff. 36v-40, ex. musicaux. Quelques capitales ornées à la plume. Rehure ancienne cuir estampé, dos refait. (Origine Bibi. Med. Palatina)

Ce ms. composite (on n'y distingue pas moins de 9 copistes), dont une grande partie est l'oeuvre d'un scribe français, a cependant dû être compilé en partie en Italie, plus probablement à Florence qu'à Rome, comme semble l'indiquer la présence de Baccio Fiorentino (no 17), de Layolle (nos 16 et 32) et d'Isaac (no 50), sans qu'il soit possible d'affirmer qu'il soit «Medicean» (Heartz). Le répertoire, très proche des sources de la chanson parisienne, incite à situer la copie plutôt dans la 2e décennie du XVIe s. alors que les relations entre l'Italie et la France étaient devenues plus actives, mais en tout cas avant 1518, date où Layolle quitte Florence pour Lyon.

Ca. 1505-15 (earliest layer); additions ca. 1510-20. The earliest layer may have been copied in France; the remainder of the manuscript was copied in Florence.
