General Description

A Troper and Sequentiary containing both monody and polyphony. The Easter play on f. 75v-78 was published by Schubiger (s. Bibl.) and was written (or acted) on the vigil of Easter by Fr. Walther Mirer together with Johannes Grebler and Werner Stouffacher. Walther Mirer is also the author of the calendar. The pieces in German at the beginning and end of the manuscript (examined by K. Bartsch) consist mainly of sacred songs and hymns and sequences translated into the vernacular. Occasional omissions of music, or text, are rare. The polyphonic forms represented are varied: this codex is one of the principal sources of German medieval part-music. There are 2 troped Kyries, 2 troped Sanctus, 1 troped Agnus, 2 untroped Benedicamus dominos, 3 troped Benedicamus dominos, 2 Responsory verses, 3 lessons, 3 lesson tropes, 4 conductus and 11 motets. The music is missing for one Responsory verse and a motet.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century paper manuscript meas. 220 x 145 mm. and consisting of 171 folios plus 1 relatively modern blank unnumbered paper flyleaf at each end. Originally there were 182 folios, but now ff. 1-3, 7, 12-15, 26, 149, 170 and 178 are missing. Fol. 167 appears twice. The binding is original leather (presumably white) over wooden boards. The spine has been strengthened with parchment which runs over on to the front and back covers. A piece of paper stuck on the spine bears the following title printed in black capitals: "Hymni cum cantu chorali saec. 14". At one time there was a clasp attached to the front cover, but most of this is now missing. An old foliation in brown ink at t.r.r. appears to be more or less contemporary with the manuscript. The script is a slightly Gothic minuscule with initials in red, black, or black with red ornament. The notation consists of typical 14th century Gothic neumes on 4-line or 5-line brown staves. There are 9-12 four-line and 7-9 five-line staves per page. Essentially the volume is a Troper and Sequentiary containing both monody and polyphony. The Easter play on f. 75v-78 dates the ms 1372, as does the calendar on f.98. The Easter play was published by Schubiger (s. Bibl.) and was written (or acted) on the vigil of Easter by Fr. Walther Mirer together with Johannes Grebler and Werner Stouffacher. Walther Mirer is also the author of the calendar. K. Bartsch examined the pieces written in German at the beginning and end of the manuscript. These consist mainly of sacred songs and hymns and sequences translated into the vernacular. Staves are ruled for music almost throughout, and occasional omissions of music, or text, are rare. The polyphonic forms to be found in EN 314 are extremely varied, for the codex is one of the principal sources of German medieval part-music. There are 2 troped Kyries, 2 troped Sanctus, 1 troped Agnus, 2 untroped Benedicamus dominos, 3 troped Benedicamus dominos, 2 Responsory verses, 3 lessons, 3 lesson tropes, 4 conductus and 11 motets. This list includes a Responsory verse and a motet for which the music is missing.
