General Description

The scribe was Jean Michel, a copyist at the Este court in Ferrara (inscriptions on f. IV' and f. V'). Copied in Ferrara, for use at the ducal court of Ercole II d'Este (1508-59). Este family library transferred from Ferrara to Modena in 1598; joined to Modena university library in 1892.

Signets à chaque début de pièce portant une numérotation en ch. romains correspondant à celle de la tabula. Les ff. I à IV et à la fin I-III, 1, 18v, 19, 36v, 37, 56v, 57, 73v, 74, 90v-91, 104, 119v, 120, 132v, 133, 154v, 155, 166v, 167, 172v, 173, 179v, 180, 196v sont blancs. Notation mesurée blanche. 10 portées par p. Au f. V: Tabula: hujus libri. Grandes capitales ornées à la plume. Reliure ancienne restaurée en 1958, cuir estampé, bouillons, coins et fermoirs métal.

Ms. copié pour Èrcole IIo d'Esté, 4e duc de Ferrare, lors de son accession à la tête de la maison d'Esté (1534), par «Zoannes Michael de Francia, Cantor Illustrissimi ducis Ferrarie» (f. IVv, mention répétée en d'autres termes au f. Vv). En outre, la messe sur laquelle s'ouvre le recueil (no 1) est dédiée au nouveau duc par Maistre Jan, maître de chapelle à la cour de Ferrare de 1522 à 1541, et qui est aussi (avec Mouton) le musicien le plus largement représenté dans le ms. avec 5 pièces (nos 1, 15, 19, 20, 21).
