Contains Guido's Micrologus, organ pipe, bells and monochord measurements, notes on modes, consonances and proportions, together with the important organum treatise Ad organum faciendum from Laon. This is preceded by three independent organa in letter notation, while another appears in the body of the treatise. The latter, Justus ut palma, consists only of the first two phrases, and is given in full in letter notation in Zaminer, 113. On fols. 9v, 20v and 28v-29 is further notation. RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 12th century parchment manuscript of musical treatises meas. 165 x 107 mm. and containing 63 folios. In addition, 3 unnumbered paper flyleaves at the front and 2 at the back belong to the 17th or 18th century binding of brown half leather over pulp boards. Parchment covers the boards where the leather ceases. Inside the front cover an 18th century hand has written Hunc codicem qui fuit Antonii Conti Jurisconsulti Avenione .... cum multis aliis curavimus. The ex libris of the Antonii Conti mentioned appears on f. 1 in pen and ink. The foliation is in modern pencil at t.r.r. The contents of the codex are described in full in Jos. Smits van Waesberghe, Guidonis Aretini Micrologus (1955), 40ff. Briefly they consist of Guido's Micrologus, organ pipe, bells and monochord measurements, notes on modes, consonances and proportions, together with the important organum treatise Ad organum faciendum from Laon. This is preceded by three independent organa in letter notation, while another appears in the body of the treatise. The latter, Justus ut palma, consists only of the first two phrases, and is hence not listed below, but it is given in full in letter notation in Zaminer, 113. Mi employs a neat minuscule script with initials in red or blue. Apart from the letter notation, delicate French neumes on 3 or 4 red lines may be found on f. 20v and 28v-29. For Guido's Sancte Johannes meritorum on f. 9v, green stave lines are used, and red lines join syllables or note-letters. The note-against-note polyphony moves generally in unisons, fourths, fifths and octaves, but is in contrary motion and allows thirds rarely. The treatise probably dates from the beginning of the 12th century, but the music may be considered to represent 11th century organum.
