A large number of prayers and offices in Latin, Norman-French and Provençal, together with the Liber divini amoris and the Scala divini amoris in Provençal and a self-contained collection of monodic Latin hymns and sequences (8 of which end with two- or three-part Amens, and iin one case the words are Alleluya). Accidentals are frequent in the measured section, and the polyphony is usually written in parts, which however may often be directly above each other, as it were in score. RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A parchment manuscript dating from c. 1300 and meas. 114 x 80 mm., this codex, apparently from Périgueux, contains 328 folios + several flyleaves. At the beginning there are 1 paper, 2 parchment, 2 paper and 2 old parchment folios; at the end 2 parchment and 1 paper leaves. The first 3 and the last 3 flyleaves must belong to the 19th century binding of yellow-brown leather, which bears the gilt Egerton arms on the cover and the following gilt title on the spine: PRECES, HYMNI, || TRACTATUS VARII. || LAT. ET GALL. ||| MUS. BRIT. || BIBL. EGERTON. ||| EX LEGATO CAROLI, || BARONIS FARNBOROUGH ||| 945. || PLUT. On July 23, 1842 the British Museum bought this source from Payne and Foss. As the title indicates, its contents are a large number of prayers and offices in Latin, Norman-French and Provençal, together with the Liber divini amoris and the Scala divini amoris in Provençal and a self-contained collection of monodic Latin hymns and sequences. The latter are of particular importance here, since 8 of them end with two- or three-part Amens (in one case the words are Alleluya). The notation is Franconian with the usual groups of longs, breves, c.o.p. ligatures, groups of 3 semibreves set to a single syllable of text and other ligatures with clearly determined mensural values. There are 5 red five-line staves per page, and the notation appears to be in the same hand as that written on red four-line staves in the plainsong offices, though this is unmeasured. Accidentals are frequent in the measured section, and the polyphony is usually written in parts, which however may often be directly above each other, as it were in score. The manuscript has a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. and includes many miniatures in blue, red, gold, green and other colours.
