General Description

Contains the Easter play or Office of the Resurrection, some 33 chants mainly for the B.V.M., the Adam play, 15 signs of the Judgment of the Sybil and various saints' lives. The music seems to be in the same hand as the Easter play which precedes it, and uses the same brown ink. The two-part writing begins at f. 14v and continues to f. 18. The text is generally written under the bottom voice only, but at the top of f. 15 it is under both voices. Bar-lines cut through both staves, but inconsistently. The Amen in the first piece has very pale notes in the upper voice only and no music at all in the lower part. Probably written in the south of France. Owned by the congregation of St. Maur; acquired by the Benedictine abbey of Marmoutier during a sale at Toulouse in 1716. The manuscript came into the possession of the Bibliothèque municipale at Tours at the time of the French Revolution in 1791.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 13th century paper manuscript meas. 147 x 108 mm. and containing 229 folios. The contents are the often published Easter play or Office of the Resurrection, some 33 chants mainly for the B.V.M., the Adam play, 15 signs of the Judgment of the Sybil and various saints' lives. The 19th century binding of blue morocco bears the words "Drames Liturgiques et Legendes en Vers" on the spine. The manuscript came into the possession of the Bibliothèque municipale at Tours at the time of the French Revolution in 1791 from the Benedictine abbey of Marmoutier just outside the town. The abbey acquired it during a sale at Toulouse in 1716, and before that time it had been in the possession of the congregation of St. Maur. The only foliation is an inconsistent 18th century one at b.r.r. In addition, there are 6 blank flyleaves at each end of the codex. The music seems to be in the same hand as the Easter play which precedes it; moreover, it uses the same brown ink. The two-part writing begins at f. 14v and continues to f. 18. There are generally 10 brown four-line staves per page, though the polyphony often demands five lines. The text is generally written under the bottom voice only, but at the top of f. 15 it is under both voices. The notation perhaps has to be dated in the 13th century with the rest of the ms, but it may well be taken from a 12th century original. In any case the codex was probably written in the south of France. The notes fall into the category of undifferentiated oblong longs and ligatures. In some cases the wavy form of long notes also found in London, British Museum, Arundel 248 occurs here too. Bar-lines cut through both staves, but inconsistently. The Amen in the first piece has very pale notes in the upper voice only and no music at all in the lower part.
