RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A 13th century parchment Missal meas. 233 x 162 mm. and containing 402 folios. The foliation runs from 7-408, so that it seems as if the number 7 was mistaken for a 1. There is no old foliation: the present one in brown ink dates from the 18th century at the latest. In addition to the folios mentioned, there is an old parchment flyleaf at each end, partly stuck to the covers. The codex is written in a neat and elegant 13th century script in 2 columns with initials in blue or red with ornament in the contrasting colour. There are several miniatures in blue, red and gold. The binding of fawn velvet over pulp boards looks old but is not original. The cover bears the words: "Donne aux Capucins de Rouen par M. de Chefdeville". Apparently this Franciscan monastery was only founded in 1582. The notation is of the usual square plainsong type on 15 red four-line staves per page. Single notes are represented by longs, unless they are repeated. On f. 366-366v, preceding the important sequentiary which completes the volume, is the well-known trope Spiritus et alme in brown ink throughout. The only polyphonic piece is the two-part sequence which ends the sequentiary on f. 405-405v. Only the top two staves of each column of this piece have six lines each: the others have four.
