General Description

Contains an abbreviated modernisation of Franco of Cologne's Ars cantus mensurabilis with discant rules (CoussH, 274ff), the 4 pieces of polyphonic music, an Algorismus (f. 9), a Compotus metrificatus (f. 10v), a Calendar (f. 15v), the Summa de virtutibus (f. 19) and de vitiis (f. 144v), some sermons (f. 150) and the Liber de VII donis spiritus sancti (f. 222). The codex is mainly written in 2 columns. The musical part of the MS from f. 3-8v is in the same hand as the treatise. There are no great stylistic differences in the four compositions, which are clearly liturgical and do not fall under the usual headings of motet or conductus.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A vellum manuscript of the 13th and 14th century meas. 181 x 140 mm. and containing 284 folios. The foliation of the codex as a whole is old, but other foliations show that this is a composite volume (e.g. at f. 150 we start at I again). The St. Victor binding of the 17th or 18th century is of green leather over pulp boards and bears the stamp of the Abbey library on front and back covers. The contents of this source are an abbreviated modernisation of Franco of Cologne's Ars cantus mensurabilis with discant rules (CoussH, 274ff), the 4 pieces of polyphonic music, an Algorismus (f. 9), a Compotus metrificatus (f. 10v), a Calendar (f. 15v), the Summa de virtutibus (f. 19) and de vitiis (f. 144v), some sermons (f. 150) and the Liber de VII donis spiritus sancti (f. 222). The codex is mainly written in 2 columns with a rounded minuscule script and the usual red and blue initials with contrasting filigree. The musical part of the ms from f. 3-8v is slightly later than the rest and dates from c. 1300. The compositions are in the same hand as the treatise, but initials are only in red. The notation is of square type with c.o.p. ligatures but no breves as single notes. The other ligatures are Franconian. There are no great stylistic differences in the four compositions, which are clearly liturgical and do not fall under the usual headings of motet or conductus. The note-against-note style nevertheless comprehends an Antiphon, two pieces from the Ordinary of the Mass and an Alleluia.
