RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: An 11th century parchment manuscript meas. 260 x 166 mm. and containing 166 folios plus an unnumbered stub (which I call f. 166 bis). In addition there are three parchment flyleaves f. I-III at the front and two paper flyleaves at each end belonging to the modern binding, which is dated 1830 and is of red leather with gilt tooling. The foliation at t.r.r. is post-medieval. Originally in the library at St. Maur des Fossés with the no. 88, this codex was also later at St. Germain des Pres. The main contents are lives of saints, one of which has some neumes on f. 166. The script of the ms corpus is a slightly Gothic minuscule with orange rubrics. The plainsong on f. I-III and f. 165v-166 bis verso is a later addition. In these pieces the script is more rounded and often has red initials and lines joining syllables. The staffless French neumes probably date from the end of the 11th or the beginning of the 12th century. The polyphonic works have two parts written one above the other over the text.
