General Description

Besseler found these pages as flyleaves in various book bindings in 1936. Two-part works precede three-part ones, though the final melisma on f. 6v returns to two-part writing again. Fol. 1-2 and 3-5 belong together, and hence must have formed the middle sheets of gatherings in both cases. All 7 compositions, which are in conductus form, are known from other sources.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: 6 leaves of a parchment manuscript of the Notre Dame school meas. at most 216 x 145 mm. Most of the leaves of these fragments are less, either through being cut down vertically or torn at the corners. Besseler found these pages as flyleaves in various book bindings in 1936, and they are now kept loose in a black envelope. A modern foliation has been added on both recto and verso sides. Except for the later addition no. 5 in small Gothic neumes of the 14th century, the notation is typical of the Notre Dame manuscripts, being square and black and without any clear mensural indications. Nevertheless, the manuscript must have been written towards the end of the 13th century. The score notation employs 12 red five-line staves per page, grouped in twos and threes according to the number of voices in the composition. Four lines were added in brown ink at the top of f. 3 for the duplum of no. 5. Two-part works precede three-part ones, though the final melisma on f. 6v returns to two-part writing again. Fol. 1-2 and 3-5 belong together, and hence must have formed the middle sheets of gatherings in both cases. Initials are in red, Unfortunately, the ms is not very well preserved, for there are many worm-holes and the notation is often worn away. Still, all 7 compositions, which are in conductus form, are known from other sources.
