General Description

A Missal written for the church of St.-Flour. Semi-Gothic script, in 2 columns throughout. The obits which run from 1303 to 1621 show that the MS was in use later at Arlanc. The Patrem also appears in Italian sources.

DIAMM, 2017
Binding

beige leather over wooden boards; poor condition but probably contemporary with the manuscript. The clasps are missing and the blind tooling is barely legible.

DIAMM, 2017
Notation

square plainsong, gives way to mensural forms at the end. Ars Nova for the two-part Patrem: original notation apparently consisted of longs, breves and semibreves only, but minim tails were added later. The breve shape with a descending tail to the left also appears here.

DIAMM, 2017
Ruling

mainly red four-line staves; two-part Patrem is on 11 five-line staves, one part on the left and one on the right.

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

338v-339v

DIAMM, 2017
Foliation

old foliation from f. II-CCXVIII at t.m.r. in blue and red Roman numerals, begins at the present f. 5. The 4 folios of the calendar of St.-Flour which open the codex were a later addition. The old foliation misses out the last 131 folios, but a modern one in black ink at t.r.r. is complete.

DIAMM, 2017
Decoration

initials in red or blue with filigree; many have more elaborate forms on gold or coloured backgrounds, and there are some miniatures of the Resurrection, Ascension, etc.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 14th century parchment manuscript meas. 340 x 230 mm. and containing 341 folios, this Missal written for the church of St.-Flour must have been compiled after the erection of the church in 1317. Its binding is in very bad condition, though it is probably contemporary with the manuscript. It is of beige leather over wooden boards. The clasps are missing and the blind tooling is barely legible. There is an old foliation from f. II-CCXVIII at t.m.r. in blue and red Roman numerals, beg. at the present f. 5. The 4 folios of the calendar of St.-Flour which open the codex were a later addition. The obits which run from 1303 to 1621 show that the ms was in use later at Arlanc. The old foliation misses out the last 131 folios, but a modern one in black ink at t.r.r. is complete. The semi-Gothic script employs initials in red or blue with filigree. Moreover, many have more elaborate forms on gold or coloured backgrounds, and there are some miniatures of the Resurrection, Ascension, etc. The writing is in 2 cols, throughout, and the notation mainly on red four-line staves. The square plainsong notation gives way to mensural forms at the end, and the two-part Patrem is in Ars Nova notation on 11 five-line staves, one part on the left and one on the right. The original notation seems to have consisted of longs, breves and semibreves only, though minim tails were added later. The breve shape with a descending tail to the left appears here, too. It seems likely that the manuscript and the Patrem were not written much later than the mid-14th century. The Patrem also appears in Italian sources.
