General Description

The folios once formed the central part of a gathering in a larger musical manuscript; judging from various folds and cuts in the parchment, it appears that these four folios were subsequently removed from the original manuscript and used as part of the binding of another book. Attributions probably obliterated by trimming. One main scribe copied ff. a-b and c'-d'; the piece on f. b'-c is in a different hand. Both scribal hands also appear in portions of ParisBNL 568, and the main scribe also copied the last three pieces in LucAS 184 (PirrPT). Of Tuscan origin (RISM); perhaps copied at the Camaldolite monastery of Santa Maria degli Angeli, at Florence (PirrPT). Formerly in the possession of the Florentine publisher Aldo Olschki. He purchased the fragments from a dealer who could give no information as to how he had acquired them. Olschki subsequently presented the fragments to Prof. Edward E. Lowinsky.

5 Italian secular pieces (2 incomplete)

(Paolo da Firenze)-4 +1?

4 parchment folios, 178 x 127. The folios are in a fair state of preservation, although the ink has faded considerably on the two outside pages, making them very difficult to read. The folios once formed the central part of a gathering in a larger musical manuscript; judging from various folds and cuts in the parchment, it appears that these four folios were subsequently removed from the original manuscript and used as part of the binding of another book. If any original foliation or composer attributions were ever present, trimming has obliterated them. The folios are numbered "a-d" in PirrPT. Black mensural notation on red 5-line staves, with some void notes used instead of red coloration. One main scribe copied ff. a-b and c'-d'; the piece on f. b'-c is in a different hand. Both scribal hands also appear in portions of ParisBNI 568, and the main scribe also copied the last three pieces in LucAS 184 (PirrPT).

Ca. 1425 (PirrPT).
