RISM Description
RISM Supplement: 1 fol. (reassembled from 11 vertically-cut strips, numbered 1-10, 12). Parchment. Each strip now c. 385 x 20 mm. Leaf originally at least 385 x 240 mm. Written space 310 mm high. Ruling: nine freely-ruled red five-line staves (24-33 mm); frame rules, and a text guide in red beneath bottom stave (recto and verso). Script: gothica textualis quadrata. Notation: English Ars nova. Decoration: capitals in text splashed in red.
Written in England. Leaf cut into twelve strips, used at the centres of gatherings in Typ. GC. A79GR (Werner Rolewinck, Fasciculus temporum ... [Nicolaus Götz; Sélestat, 1478] [Hain *6922; BMC, I, p. 239]). This book was rebound in October 1959, when ten strips (1-4, 6-8, 10-12) were removed; strips 5 and 9 remain in the book, after fols. 1 and 66, and strip 11 has since been lost. The strips are now loosely joined with adhesive tape, and kept separately. The binding is of blind-stamped calf over wooden boards, with one central clasp; stamps are an eagle, and a rose that can be identified with Oldham, pl. XXVI, No. 376 (his Binder D, responsible for bindings of books dating from the years 1483-1486; see Oldham, p. 31). Owned: William Fowler, S.T.D., Principal of Aberdeen in 1657. Various names written s. xvi on fol. 2. I am grateful to Dr John Milsom for drawing my attention to this source.
