RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: 13th century parchment musical flyleaves from ms Corpus Christi College 86, now arranged in the correct order from the following order since November, 1952 : f. 7, 5, 3, 1, 2, 4, 6. The leaves are bound in light brown cloth of the present [20th] century with a parchment spine. The 4 blank unnumbered paper flyleaves at the front and the 5 at the back belong with this binding. The foliation is in modern pencil at t.r.r. The parent manuscript Corpus Christi College 86 meas. 286 x 170 mm. contains a variety of works written in 2 cols, with red or blue initials or both. Its 239 folios include 3 blank unnumbered modern pages at the front and 3 similar folios at the end. The brown leather binding over wooden boards with blind tooling at front and rear is perhaps 16th century work, while the codex itself dates from the 14th century. It too has a modern pencil foliation at t.r.r. The contents include Alexander's letter to Aristotle on the wonders of India, the Secreta secretorum of Pseudo-Aristotle, Aesop's Fables, Adelard of Bath's De causis naturalium compositorum, Gundissalinus' De divisione philosophiae, etc. The musical flyleaves at present meas. as follows: f. 1: 262 x 21 mm., a mere vertical strip with fragments of 1 or 2 Kyrie Tro; f. 2: 283 x 211 mm.; f. 3 (cut away vertically at right by almost a third): 284 x 152 mm.; f. 4 (similarly cut away): 282 x 154 mm.; f. 5: 277 x 191 mm.; f. 6: 276 x 194 mm.; f. 7 (cut away as before): 281 x 136 mm. Except for the later additions on f. 3v-4 and f. 5v-6, all folios contain 4 accolades of 3 red five-line staves per page. As in W1 and other British sources, it is often difficult to distinguish between the individual groups of five lines, which tend to merge into one continuous fifteen-line stave. Initials are red-blue and the notation of English mensural type. The later additions in the wide lower margin are 2 early 14th century motets in English mensural notation on 4 brown five- or four-line staves, while the other pieces are either polyphonic Kyrie Tro or conductus.
