RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: An early 13th century vellum manuscript meas. 130x95 mm. and containing xvi + 110 folios. The foliation is in modern ink, except for the flyleaves which are in pencil : all the numbers are at t.r.r. The binding is of brown leather over wooden boards with blind tooling and 2 clasps. The tooling on the front and back covers consists of a crown over a garter. The main contents, which are written in a Gothic script with red, blue and green initials, are a life of Oswin, king and martyr, and an office for him from f. 63-end. The earlier parts in particular have music in English neumes tending towards square notation on 6 or 7 red four-line staves per page. The clef is generally b, but also c. The two-part voice-exchange hymn Nunc sancte nobis spiritus appears on f. 73 -73v. The rests are coloured green. This is one of the rare cases where the hymn appears in score with a wavy line between the two voices. Moreover, musically the piece is a rather distant variant of the usual composition.
