General Description

1 bifolio and 2 single leaves from the same MS; served originally as a cover for MS D.R. 3 (= Daventry Rolls 3). Two straps hold the covers together. Today the corpus contains ii + 19 folios, of which f. 1-17 is the original MS and f. i-ii and 18-19 are ribbed paper flyleaves belonging to the modern binding. This 15th century paper MS contains memoranda of services and rents of the Cluniac priory in Daventry in the reigns of Henry VI, Richard III and Henry VII. The musical contents are Marian antiphons, a sequence, and polyphonic mass settings in English discant style, and there are two concordances with the Old Hall MS. It would appear that the separate leaves were used as flyleaves and the bifolio as the cover for MS D.R. 3, for the coloured initials and to some extent the notation and text have been transferred from the pages which were next to each other. This proves that our f. B was against f. 1v, though upside down, and our f. Av against f. 2, again upside down.

(D. D. Ch. Ch. is an abbreviation of 'Deposited Deeds Christ Church'.)

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A late 14th century bifolio meas. 280 x 185 mm. and 2 single leaves meas. 270 x 175 mm., all from one manuscript and all parchment. These pages served originally as a cover for ms D.R. 3 (= Daventry Rolls 3), which is preserved in a large box with many rolls from Christ Church. Ms D. R. 3 was recently bound in plain parchment over pulp boards. Two straps hold the covers together. It meas. 211 x 145 mm. and contains ii + 19 folios, of which f. The leaves are frequently damaged. Ms D. R. 3 * is in part very illegible, particularly the outside pages of the bifolio (f. 1 and 2v), but the 2 separate leaves are not much better. All pages have holes in them and are gauzed. The notation is of Ars Nova type on 12 red five-line staves per page in 4 accolades of 3 staves throughout. Red initials alternate with blue in the Gothic script of the texts of the bifolio, but the separate leaves only use plain red initials. The contents are Marian antiphons, a sequence, and polyphonic mass settings in English discant style, and there are two concordances with the Old Hall ms.

RISM BIV/4: 14./15. Jh.; 4 Blätter Pergament, 280 x 180 mm. Moderne Foliierung f. 1, 2, A, B. Je Seite 12 (bis 15 ?)

Andrew Hughes datiert 14. Jh. Zwei weitere Blätter derselben Herkunft gehören ins späte 13. Jh. (Ms. D. D. Ch. Ch. c. 6).
