General Description

Sarum Gradual containing Proprium de tempore (f. 1-42), votive masses of the B.M.V. (f. 42-45v), Requiem mass (f. 45v), Credo (f. 49-57v), Kyriale with troped Kyries and Glorias (f. 58-64), Sanctus (f. 64v-66v), Agnus dei (f. 66v-68v), proses for the B.M.V. (f. 68v-72v), common of the dedication (f. 73-75v), Sanctorale (f. 75v-93v) and common of the saints (f. 93v-lllv). On f. 112v there is a Latin hymn written by Johannes Rows, curatus de Radeford.

Binding

Plain parchment over compressed cardboard; 19th century. The spine is mostly bared, showing the gatherings, and at the top of the spine may be seen the obsolete shelfmark of the MS : 357. The ribbed paper flyleaves belong to this binding.

Unmeasured notation. Te upper voice of no. 1 employs groups of 4 and 5 semibreves in Fauvel manner. Single notes are written as longs

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 1: A late 13th century Sarum Gradual meas. 251 x 166 mm. and containing ii + 111 + iii folios. The contents are divided as follows: Proprium de tempore (f. 1-42), votive masses of the B.M.V. (f. 42-45v), Requiem mass (f. 45v), Credo (f. 49-57v), Kyriale with troped Kyries and Glorias (f. 58-64), Sanctus (f. 64v-66v), Agnus dei (f. 66v-68v), proses for the B.M.V. (f. 68v-72v), common of the dedication (f. 73-75v), Sanctorale (f. 75v-93v) and common of the saints (f. 93v-lllv). Two leaves are missing after f. 91. The foliation is in modern pencil at t.r.r. The ribbed paper flyleaves belong to the 19th century binding of plain parchment over compressed cardboard. On f. 112v there is a Latin hymn written in the 15th century by Johannes Rows, curatus de Radeford. The spine is mostly bared, showing the gatherings, and at the top of the spine may be seen the obsolete shelfmark of the ms : 357. Initials are in blue-red, and some miniatures have green too. The square plainsong notation employs red four-line staves (11 on f. 1-48, 10 on f. 49-72, and 2 cols, of 10-11 on f. 73-97).
