General Description

Two folios, remnants of a choirbook containing Masses, motets, and secular pieces; other fragments from same manuscript now NurS 9a and Melk MS 749. See also the reconstruction of the fragments. Copied by a single scribe, who also wrote NurS 9a. Possibly copied in Vienna; used at Church of St. Stephen (StroMB). Folios used c. 1460 by bookbinder Mathias aus Wien as binding material for manuscript treatise (“Tractatus Albion”) owned by the mathematician and astronomer Johannes Regiomontanus (Johann Müller) of Vienna. Regiomontanus later moved to Nuremberg; after his death (1476), his manuscripts passed to Nuremberg Stadtbibliothek, where “Tractatus Albion” was catalogued as MS Centurio V, 61.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: Two late 14th century vellum flyleaves meas. 291 x 225 mm., which are now detached from the parent ms. Cent-V, 61. Originally they belonged to a collection of motets in Ars Nova notation with red notes and rests. There are 8 red five-line staves per page and red initials, sometimes with filigree. The French influence is obvious, not only because of the notation and a well-known French motet, but also due to the general style of the compositions. However, a German origin is suggested by the reference to Louis of Bavaria in motet 2, the German words in the lower parts of motet 1 (Siehs an and Lug auff), and the unique textless instrumental piece Bobik (?) blasen, which seems to have been originally a Virelai, judging from the overt and clos at the end of each voice. The two flyleaves were apparently originally a bifolio, though the absence of the Mot in no. 1 is surprising.

2 fragmentary parchment folios, 291 x 255 (trimmed from original size of ca. 355 x 275). Remnants of a choirbook containing Masses, motets, and secular pieces; other fragments from same manuscript now NurS 9a. No original foliation remains; first folio numbered “1” in modern pencil. Black mensural notation on red staves, with red coloration. Copied by a single scribe, who also wrote NurS 9a. Staff height 22. Red inked Gothic initials, some with filigree work.

Ca. 1390-1410, or slightly later (Reinhard Strohm). Possibly of south German or Austrian origin. Folios used ca. 1460 by bookbinder Mathias aus Wien as binding material for manuscript treatise (“Tractatus Albion”) owned by the mathematician and astronomer Johannes Regiomontanus [ = Johann Müller] of Vienna. Regiomontanus later moved to Nuremberg; after his death (1476), his manuscripts passed to Nuremberg Stadtbibliothek, where “Tractatus Albion” was catalogued as MS Centurio V, 61. Fragments with music later removed from binding; now preserved separately.
