General Description

A Cistercian Gradual from Hauterive, Switzerland. The original volume is made up of f. 1-89 and 108-110. The additions include a number of proses, troped Benedicamus, a short Litany without notation and a Kyriale from a different book. The polyphony is in different hands: no. 1 is written in an early 13th century hand similar to StM-D but more cultivated, and staves, initials and the line dividing the two parts are in red; no. 2, which is even more like the works in StM-D is written in brown ink throughout with rectangular notes and dates from the 12th century; no. 3 is a 15th century addition in large square notes on red four-line staves with minims for currentes; no. 4 is in 14th century square notation with red four-line staves, red-blue initials and a red dividing line between the two parts, but there are no bar-lines like those in nos. 1 and 5 ; no. 5 is in a similar notation to no. 4, but perhaps c. 1300, while the bar-lines are brown, initials red and single notes breves instead of longs. The codex was bought by Sir Thomas Phillipps at Berne c. 1825, and bore the no. 1251 in his library. It was bought by the Bodleian in 1898.
