General Description

Chartulary with polyphony on recto of first parchment folio. Copied in England. Once belonged to Lichfield Cathedral. Later owned by the antiquarian Elias Ashmole (1617-92); bequeathed to Oxford University in 1677. Housed in Ashmolean Museum 1683-1860, then transferred to Bodleian Library.

Chartulary, with polyphony: 2 motets (fragmentary)

ii paper + 117 parchment + xii paper folios, 308 x 211. New pencil foliation, 1-12 + original ink foliation, 1-103 (last two folios unnumbered). Original covers of brown leather over cardboard; new spine. Polyphony on recto of first parchment folio: one motet in black mensural notation, with black void coloration; other motet in white mensural notation, copied by a different scribe. Staff height 15. Initials and rubric for one motet in red ink; no other decoration.

First half of 16th century. Copied in England. Chartulary once belonged to Lichfield Cathedral. Later owned by the antiquarian Elias Ashmole (1617-92); bequeathed to Oxford University in 1677. Housed in Ashmolean Museum 1683-1860, then transferred to Bodleian Library.
