General Description

The main contents is a copy of Chaucer's 'Canterbury Tales', attractively written with wide margins; fol. 1-3v is part of a 15th century Sarum Calendar (the obit of William Heed on September 10th, 1510, is a late addition) Fol. i and 312 are musical flyleaves which were originally a couple of bifolios opened out to form 2 single pages with the top and right margins cut down. If these 2 bifolios are the middle 2 of a quaternio, given labels of f. A-H, the correct order of pages is: f. 1, col. 2 = f. B; f. 1v, col. 1 = f. Bv; f. 312, col. 2 = f. C; f. 312v, col. 1 = f. Cv; f. 312v, col. 2 = f. F; f. 312,col. 1 = f. Fv; f. 1v,col.2 = f. G; f. 1, col. 1 = f. Gv. Other owners include Thomas Heed, civis Londoniarum, and Edmounde Clarke, one of the queen's footmen in the 16th century.

RISM Description

RISM B/IV 2: A 15th century parchment manuscript meas. 330 x 200 mm. and containing i+312 folios (actually only i+311 folios, since f. 174-175 is a single page). Fol. i and 312 are 14th century musical flyleaves meas. 321 x 205 mm., though they originally measured 260 x 192 mm., since they are a couple of bifolios opened out to form 2 single pages with the top and right margins cut down. Assuming that our 2 bifolios are the middle 2 of a quaternio, which we may call f. A-H, the correct order of pages is as follows: f. 1, col. 2 = f. B; f. 1v, col. 1 = f. Bv; f. 312, col. 2 = f. C; f. 312v, col. 1 = f. Cv; f. 312v, col. 2 = f. F; f. 312,col. 1 = f. Fv; f. 1v,col.2 = f. G; f. 1, col. 1 = f. Gv. The main contents of the codex is a mid-15th century copy of Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales", attractively written with wide margins and initials in blue-red or gold, the latter sometimes with violet ornament. Fol. 1-3v is part of a 15th century Sarum Calendar (the obit of William Heed on September 10th, 1510, is a late addition). Other owners include Thomas Heed, civis Londoniarum, and Edmounde Clarke, one of the queen's footmen in the 16th century. The modern pencil foliation is at t.r.r. The binding is of 15th century English origin and consists of brown stamped leather over new wooden boards. The spine has been renovated, and the blind tooling consists of roses and lozenges. All the music, Kyries and Kyrie and Gloria Tro together with one conductus, is in three-part score with four accolades of five-line staves per page. Important full-length red initials appear on f. 312v. The notation varies from fully-developed Ars Nova or Petronian type to simple long-breve semeiography. The typically English joined groups of c.o.p. ligatures and the flat and sharp accidentals may be noted.
