General Description

A bifolium, possibly the outermost of a gathering, now serving as wrapper for a legal document. Notation in score format; copied by a single scribe. Written space 195-215 x 137-145 mm; some text guides. Gothica textualis semi-quadrata, probably copied by a single hand. Written in England. The bifolium was used in the 16th century as a wrapper for NWr, Flitcham 299, a terrier made in 1512/13 for lands in Flitcham (Norfolk) belonging to Flitcham Priory (other copies of the terrier are Flitcham 300, similarly bound with a leaf from a noted breviary, and Flitcham 297, fols. 63 ff.) The Priory at Flitcham was a cell of the Augustinian Priory at Walsingham (rentals and other estate documents for Walsingham Priory lands in Flitcham also survive in this collection). It is possible that the parent house at Walsingham was the source of the music leaves. Pen-trials and financial memoranda appear on fols. A-Bv, probably added in the sixteenth century. Owned by Flitcham Priory until the Dissolution in 1538; Sir William Hollis, his heirs and other holders of the former Priory lands (for whom see E Blomefield and C. Parkin, An Essay Towards a Topographical History of the County of Norfolk ..., 11 vols. [London, 1805-1810], VIII, p. 413); Sir Edward Coke, Lord Chief Justice, in the seventeenth century; the Earls of Leicester. Deposited at the Norfolk Record Office in 1956, after the sale of parts of the Holkham estate to the Crown.

RISM Description

RISM Supplement: 2 fols, (unfoliated, but here designated A and B). Parchment. 260 x 173 mm. Written space 195-215 x 137-145 mm. Ruling: nine freely-ruled red five-line staves (13.5-16 mm); some text guides. Collation: a bifolium, possibly the outermost of a gathering. Script: gothica textualis semi-quadrata, probably a single hand. Notation: English ternary breve-semibreve; cauda hirundinis in 8.

Written in England. Used s. xvi in. to form a crudely stitched wrapper for NWr, Flitcham 299, a terrier made in 1512/13 for lands in Flitcham (Norfolk) belonging to Flitcham Priory. Other copies of the terrier are Flitcham 300, similarly bound with a leaf from a noted breviary s. xiii in., and Flitcham 297, fols. 63 ff. The Priory at Flitcham was a cell of the Augustinian Priory at Walsingham (rentals and other estate documents for Walsingham Priory lands in Flitcham also survive in this collection). It is possible that the parent house at Walsingham was the source of the music leaves. Pen-trials and financial memoranda appear on fols. A-Bv, s. xvi. An elaborate penwork capital 'O' is offset on the last page of the terrier (not from the surviving music leaves). Fols. A-B were removed in 1980 and are now kept separately. Owned: Flitcham Priory until the Dissolution in 1538; Sir William Hollis, his heirs and other holders of the former Priory lands (for whom see E Blomefield and C. Parkin, An Essay Towards a Topographical History of the County of Norfolk ..., 11 vols. [London, 1805-1810], VIII, p. 413); Sir Edward Coke, Lord Chief Justice, s. xvii in.; the Earls of Leicester. Deposited at the Norfolk Record Office in 1956, after the sale of parts of the Holkham estate to the Crown.
