RISM Description

RISM Supplement: 2 fols, (fragmentary; unfoliated, but foliation of Wathey in: Lefferts and Bent followed here), and a small fragment that remains embedded in fol. 155 of MS Hale 146). Parchment. Now 80 x 384 mm; pages originally at least 193 mm wide. Written space at least 177 mm wide. Ruling: freely-ruled brown five-line staves (13-16 mm); vertical frame rules, and a ruled indentation (at least 10 mm) for an initial 'A' on fol. Bv. Collation: a bifolium; original gutter confirms order of leaves. Script: a moderate gothica textualis semi-quadrata. Notation: English Ars nova in 1-3 and 5; English ternary breve-semibreve in 4 and 6. Decoration: two- and three-stave plain red initial 'A's for 2 and 6.

Written in England. Used as a quire-guard in MS Hale 146, a large paper copy, s. xiv/xv, of the Liber assisarum, and other pleas arranged by subject, from the reign of Edward III (19-47 Edward III [1345-74]). The binding of MS Hale 146 was of white whittawed leather over bevelled oak boards and was probably contemporary with the manuscript; chainmarks in the front board may suggest an early institutional ownership. The leather cover, now kept with the manuscript, was removed in 1960, when the music, a bifolium of a yearbook of Edward I and other fragments were also removed. All fragments taken from the binding are now kept separately. Owned: Lincoln's Inn by c. 1640 (06, MS Add. C.40,p.i).

NOTES ON CONTENTS

1-5 Fragmentary; texts cut off. 2 Middle voice carries plainsong Deo gratias (GS, pl. 19*). 6 One of probably three or four voices; beginning only. On the virgin.
