General Description

A Sextus partbook from a set of six volumes. Modern compilation (by J. J. Maier) of originally separate items, of varying sizes. Copied by eight scribes—I: #1; II: #2-3; III: #4-5, #9; IV: #6, #14-15 (also wrote MunBS 1505); V: #7 (also wrote #5 of MunBS 274a); VI: #8 (also wrote ParisBNC 1408 and # 4 and # 7 of ParisBNC 1591); VII: # 10; VIII: #11-13, #16 (also wrote parts of MunBS 274a and #1 of ParisBNC 1591) (Rifkin). Some items probably copied in Augsburg; others probably of French or Netherlandish origin. Owned by Johann Heinrich Herwart (1520-83) of Augsburg. Herwart collection purchased by Wilhelm V, Duke of Bavaria, in 1585; placed in court library at Munich, whose holdings formed foundation of present Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
